About these walkthroughs
These are screen-by-screen guides using the real prototype interface, with clearly labeled diagrams for controls. They are not a recording of a complete native CAD build. File import, part manipulation and physical controller/headset steps are instructions where an action could not be recorded. This recording browser could not render live 3D. Bill’s browser needs working 3D graphics for on-model interaction.
The welcome introduction above includes narration. These eight instructional lessons remain captioned, with no audio. The original five-second brand introduction remains available.
Try a harmless practice part. The supplied collar is a simple training mesh: 30 mm outside diameter, 20 mm inside diameter, 12 mm high. It is not a supplier component or a manufacturing design.
Download practice collar · STL in millimetresFit a scan surface inside GO3D
For a quick trial, download the small exemplar test kit. It contains two extracted shaft-collar bodies from Bill’s original STEP files and their checked surface fits.
- For Bill’s large STEP files, open Place parts → Open Bill’s STEP exemplars or a large assembly. Choose the original STEP, search the body list, and load one component.
- Place that component, or use the active scan. Open Surface & color → Automatic scan → NURBS.
- Choose the target and a surface point. Set a small patch width and a realistic tolerance, then select Fit NURBS.
- Inspect the cyan surface, gold control net and measured deviation map. GO3D reports any reduction in patch width.
- Download the surface STEP and fit report. With the updated paired companion, Send to SolidWorks creates a new native sheet part that can also be downloaded here.
This fits local open surfaces; it does not automatically rebuild a complete watertight product or its feature history. Source meshes and STEP originals are preserved. Check physical dimensions and native CAD before manufacturing.
Open automatic NURBS fitting3D mouse and VR
Open 3D mouse & VR beneath the model to connect a compatible six-axis mouse or review the current geometry in a WebXR headset. The setup guide explains device support, sizing and controller measurements.
3D mouse & VR setup →Your first complete session
Use a small test scan first. Tick a step only after its checkpoint is true.
1 Get comfortable with the view
- Open Help → Show me around. Use the existing exemplar if your product scan is not ready.
- Drag to rotate. Use Shift/right-drag to pan, or two fingers on touch. Scroll or pinch to zoom.
- Choose Center view whenever the model is difficult to find. Start orbit spins the view; set the speed, then stop it before placing a point.
- On a phone, expand the viewer, turn to landscape and use Hide controls for more model space. Help remains your way back to the guide.
2 Load and calibrate your product scan
- Name the product or revision. For a different product, choose Start a new product recipe; a backup of the prior recipe downloads first.
- Open Scan / measure. Choose the scan’s coordinate units, then drop one STL, OBJ, PLY or STEP/STP into the product-scan area.
- If you know the physical length matching an X, Y or Z extent, enter that length in millimetres and choose the matching calibration axis before loading. The scale change is uniform.
- Read the active scan status. Keep the original scan: the recipe saves its identity and scale metadata, while the geometry must be relinked after reopening.
Capture with a suitable LiDAR or photogrammetry app, then export a mesh. This viewer does not directly run the phone’s LiDAR hardware or reconstruct 3-D geometry from RAW photos. RAW images are useful for color and surface evidence.
3 Measure and section the product
- Choose Measure between two points. Click or tap a visible surface point, then the second point. The saved value is a straight-line distance in the scan frame.
- Compare at least one scan measurement with a ruler or caliper. Use critical dimensions from the physical object for fit decisions.
- Open Section and enable Show section on displayed model. Choose an axis and move the slice, or use Plane at clicked point.
- Use the small on-model toolbar to adjust or rotate the plane. Queue useful cuts and download a section DXF when needed.
Displayed sections are mesh intersections and uncapped review contours. They are not newly created watertight solids. The SolidWorks companion can execute native cuts only against a suitable saved native CAD target.
4 Add a real mechanical component
- In Place parts, choose a supplier component or import a local mechanical library file. STEP/STP is previewed as a mesh in the browser; native SolidWorks files use the optional local companion.
- Select the library part and choose Add part at scan center or the exemplar’s scan datum. This anchor is a starting position.
- Use Place center at clicked point, XYZ and rotation fields to refine its position. Use Drag part in view for small screen-plane adjustments.
- Record the manufacturer, part number and source URL. Toggle its preview layer when you need to inspect the scan beneath it.
Automatic placement does not calculate mating faces or clearance. Inspect the interface and verify dimensions before fabrication.
5 Try the DualSense layout
- Connect the controller by USB or pair it in your device’s Bluetooth settings. Return to the viewer and keep its tab focused.
- Open Keyboard & controller, choose DualSense layout, then Scan controller. Press and release a controller button.
- Rotate with the left stick, pan with the right stick, and zoom with L2/R2. Start at low stick speed and increase the dead zone if the view drifts.
- Select a placed component. In its toolbar, choose View, Move or Rotate. With the DualSense layout, L3 cycles those modes and R3 toggles Fine control. Return to View to navigate the camera.
- If a button differs in your browser, choose the action, select Map next controller button, press it, then release it to arm the mapping.
The controller uses the browser’s standard Gamepad mapping. Controller order and availability can vary by browser and device. Adaptive trigger feedback and haptics are not used.
6 Plan surface and finish tests
- Choose one named product region for comparison. Keep the same scan identity, XYZ alignment and boundary for every method.
- Start with the scan as the fidelity reference. Compare a feature-based interface, a local NURBS patch, and QUICKSURFACE only where that region needs them.
- After actually running a CAD method, record its software version, measured deviation, patch count, file size, rebuild outcome and notes.
- Choose a color route: full-color printing, a printed wrap or hydro-dip. Record texture, seams, registration and material questions.
The viewer prepares and records these tests. It does not run Geomagic/QUICKSURFACE, create a NURBS model automatically, or simulate printed color and film stretch.
7 Save the design and review the handoff
- Use Save design recipe before leaving the browser. Keep the scan and supplier CAD files beside it.
- Export the review package from Place parts. Inspect the recipe, parts list, component meshes and any included calibrated scan/DXF contours.
- For an editable native CAD return, connect the local SolidWorks companion to a suitable saved native target, verify the shared frame, then create a separate design copy.
- Open, rebuild and inspect that returned design. Check scale, mates, dimensions, clearance, materials and manufacturing process before release.
STL and STEP-derived browser previews are review meshes. A scan mesh does not become an editable native B-rep feature tree by being imported. Manufacturing remains on hold until the design is checked.
When you need native CAD
- Open Workstation. Use Setup first. Record the actual computer and installed software.
- Follow the SolidWorks companion guide on Bill’s Windows computer. Work with a saved copy and verify origin, scale and XYZ before running native commands.
- Use the QUICKSURFACE guide for a small, named surface trial. Installation and licensing are separate from this website.
- Mates stores named plane/axis relationships for native CAD to solve. Surface & color fits local NURBS sheets and records external-tool trials. Whole-product reconstruction and native feature history remain separate work.
- Return to Design transfer only when its checks are satisfied. Open and rebuild the returned CAD, then inspect dimensions, mates and clearance. Manufacturing remains on hold until approved.
Compare PCs accepts actual readiness reports. Run a test compares three measured warm runs using the same file and settings. No remote CAD computer is running merely because this page is open.

Common questions
The scan is the wrong size. What should I check?
Confirm the units used by the scan exporter. Reopen the original scan with the correct units, or enter a known physical length matching the selected axis extent. A known measurement sets uniform scale; it does not repair scan distortion.
I lost the model or the controls.
Use Center view to recover the model. Use Show controls to reopen the controls. Stop orbit before picking a point, and cancel any point-pick tool that is still waiting for input.
Why did the right stick move a component?
Drag mode is enabled. Toggle it off with Circle in the starter profile, or use Drag part in view, to return the right stick to camera panning.
Why is a native build unavailable?
It needs a connected local companion, a suitable saved native CAD target, verified origin/scale, and native library identities. An imported scan is reference geometry and cannot act as a native feature target.
Does saving the recipe also save all my large files?
No. Keep the original scan and supplier CAD files. The recipe records scan identity, scale, measurements, placements and other design intent. Relink the matching files when you reopen it.
Can Bill do his whole design here?
The prototype supports scan review, calibrated mesh measurements, section planning, library placement and review packaging here. Native feature editing, mate solving and manufacturing validation still need the appropriate CAD tools or a connected native target.
Position a part directly
Place a library component and tap it, or choose it from Placed part. Open its compact toolbar in the model and choose Move or Rotate. Source XYZ uses the scan frame; Part axes follows the component. Use X/Y/Z buttons for exact steps, Fine control for one-tenth speed, and Done to return to viewing. Each gesture is one undo step. With the DualSense layout, L3 changes mode and R3 toggles fine control.
